Milk Kefir Grains Recommended Instructions

What you will need:

  • Milk kefir grains
  • Fresh milk (preferably Organic whole milk, but you can use any type)
  • Glass jar
  • Non-metallic stirring utensil (plastic or wooden)
  • Breathable cover (such as a coffee filter or clean cloth)
  • Rubber band or string to secure the cover

1. Acquire Kefir Grains

  • Purchase milk kefir grains from a trusted source. If you have purchased from Servant’s Heart, you have purchased from a trusted source!

2. Prepare Equipment

  • Ensure your glass jar and stirring utensil are clean. Sterilize them with hot water if needed.

3. Add Kefir Grains to Jar

  • Place the kefir grains into the glass jar.

4. Add Milk

  • Pour fresh milk into the jar, leaving some space at the top for expansion. Use about 1-2 tablespoons of kefir grains for every 2 cups of milk.

5. Cover and Secure

  • Cover the jar with a breathable material, like a coffee filter or clean cloth, and secure it with a rubber band or string. This allows airflow while keeping out contaminants.

6. Fermentation

  • Place the jar in a warm, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Ideal temperature for fermentation is around 68-85°F (20-30°C).
  • Let it ferment for 12 to 48 hours, depending on your taste preference and the ambient temperature. The longer it ferments, the tangier and thicker it will become.

7. Check Consistency

  • After the desired fermentation time, check the consistency. It should be thickened and slightly tangy. If it's too thin, let it ferment longer.

8. Strain Kefir

  • Once fermented to your liking, strain the kefir into another clean jar using a plastic or wooden strainer. This separates the kefir grains from the liquid kefir.

9. Store or Consume

  • Store the strained kefir (liquid) in the refrigerator to slow down fermentation and maintain its freshness.

10. Repeat

  • Continue using the separated grains to make more kefir whenever you want. Fresh kefir awaits you every 12-48 hours.

Remember, homemade kefir may vary in taste and consistency depending on factors like temperature, fermentation time, and milk type. Adjust these variables to achieve your preferred flavor and texture. Enjoy your homemade milk kefir!
